Tourism, a factor for economic development

The natural beauty of the Ourthe valley has been attracting tourists for many years. Localities such as Durbuy and La Roche have been developing thanks to the attractiveness of the river and the surrounding sites.

Hotton also benefits charming and natural-looking surroundings since the older people didn’t build anything along the Ourthe river banks. The Oneux island in the centre of the village makes it look even more verdant.

The charms of our locality have been gradually brought to light since the end of World War II: tower and municipal parks, Renissart rockbaths… and above all the discovery and the exploiting of the caves by the private sector.

Afterwards the creation of a water-based recreation area attracted tourists to the centre of the village.

After a weaker period the Royal Tourist Office and the Municipal Administration have been pouring money into tourism since the early 1990s: purchase of the island of Oneux, the Faber Miller, the Godenir House, development of convivial spaces and Batty Street, construction of the « boat » - playground on the island of Oneux … and, since March 2007, the miniature golf, the fauna and flora showcase and the
RIVEO - Centre d’Interprétation de la Rivière  (River Interpretation Centre). Not to mention that the Ny castle farm has been restored and fitted out by a farmer for tourism purposes.

The Royal Tourist Office plays an essential role in economic development thanks to its various actions: visitor information, local business promotion, enhancement of tourist attractions and activities, event planning local associations, walkway maintenance, signage and enhancement…

Moreover it is becoming more and more a think-tank for tourism development aiming at protecting the natural environment whose major axis is the Ourthe river. This action plan is being implemented within the framework of the Leaders programmes for the Mid-Ourthe area.
